Understanding Major Shifts in Instagram Algorithms in 2026

Published on 25.08.2026 by Tracey Chizoba Fletcher

hIf you have been on Instagram for some time now, you might discover that you are not getting the same results you were getting some time back, despite creating the same quality of content, engaging with your audience, and even experimenting with new features. This is the same story with many other creators, and trying to grow an Instagram account may feel like trying to hit a moving target.

What worked a few years ago isn't working today. There are new features like Instagram Shopping trends and Reels, and the metrics that mattered a while back no longer have as much weight as they used to. Additionally, hashtags no longer have an impact on the discoverability of your content, and the use of an AI-powered algorithm means that the platform has changed how it serves content to users. That means if you are still using the same Instagram growth strategy you used a few years back, you are likely to fail. In this article, we provide you with an updated Instagram growth strategy focusing on what works on Instagram in 2026.

Algorithm Changes that Have Occurred on Instagram

In the last year or so, the Instagram Algorithm has focused more on what they term as content worth sharing. This means that the way the platform pushes content has also changed. According to the Instagram head, Adam Mosseri, Instagram now has a different ranking system for the feed, Stories, Reels, and Explore.

For these three sections, the metrics that matter more are the send-per-reach share in DM, likes per reach, and watch time. Each of the sections tracks different signals and has a different purpose.

On 31st December 2025, Mosseri shared a year-end memo that said Instagram would prioritize raw and real human content rather than AI-generated content. Additionally, original content on Instagram is distributed 40 to 60% more compared to reposts. If an account is seen to have more than 10 reposts in a month, it is completely removed from the recommendations. Instagram is now also recommending longer reels that are over 3 minutes to non-followers in its recommendation system. When you understand the signals that really matter, you can determine what is impacting your reach.

On top of the above, Instagram hashtags don't matter as much as they used to. However, the use of on-screen text, audio, and captions all impacts how Instagram recommends your content. This means creators now make it clear what their niche is in the first two seconds.

Finally, carousel posts seem to be experiencing a rebound. Since viewers tend to swipe through them. They can generate different signals for each post, something that the algorithm loves. Therefore, if you have been focusing on reels alone, you might want to add carousels in your content mix.

How Original Content Ensures More Content Visibility

One of the major shifts in the Instagram algorithm in 2026 is the focus on original content. That means reposted content is often penalized by Instagram, while the platform rewards original content. According to one report, in 2026:

  • The original creator saw a 40 to 60% increase in the reach of their content.
  • Reposters saw a 60 to 80% drop in the reach of their content.

Instagram considers accounts that repost more than 10 times in 30 days to be excluded from the Suggested Posts, Reels tab, and Explore. The platform uses AI to determine content that is reposted, even when such content has been slightly edited. It also penalises content with a watermark from other platforms, such as TikTok, or videos that are re-uploaded. That means the platform needs content that is made for Instagram and not recycled content.

The next question you may have in mind is what might count as original content. This can include:

  • Content you photographed, designed, or filmed yourself.
  • Content with original text overlaid and captions.
  • Duets or remixes with original commentary.
  • Carousels featuring their own text and graphics.

On the other hand, the following content will be considered not original and will be penalized.

  • Re-uploading other people’s feelings.
  • Posting TikTok videos featuring watermarks.
  • A compilation of screens from other social media platforms.
  • Content that reposts trending videos.

This means these changes will benefit creators who create their own content rather than accounts that aggregate content from other platforms.

Algorithm Changes You Need to Know to Grow Your Instagram Account

As noted in the previous section, Instagram no longer has a single algorithm. Therefore, if you need to grow your Instagram account in 2026, you need to understand how each of these sections works. Let us look at how each of the different sections works.

Feed

The Instagram feed usually shows the content from the accounts you already follow, as well as the ones you don't. The Instagram algorithm will determine the order in which it recommends content, depending on the way you engage with the post. The ranking signals for the Instagram feed focus on a number of factors, such as:

  • Relationship strength. This metric tracks your frequency of interacting with the account that posts, either through comments, DMs, Story replies, or by visiting the profile. If you regularly send messages to someone, their content will appear at the top of the Feed.
  • Timeliness. The latest post will usually rank higher as Instagram values recency, but not chronologically. The platform will often prioritize posts that are not more than a few hours old.
  • Engagement velocity. The speed at which a post gets engagement after it has been posted will impact its engagement. When a post gets a high number of likes, dislikes, and comments within the first hour, Instagram will push it more to followers.
  • Interest prediction. Instagram tries to predict how interested the user is in a post based on their previous behaviors. That means if they are previously engaged with fitness content, their fitness posts are likely to rank more highly.

To take advantage of the feed algorithm to grow your Instagram account, you need to focus on building relationships with your audience. This is important as the feed algorithm rewards accounts that drive genuine engagement with followers, either by engaging with followers through their feed posts or responding to their inquiries in your DM.

It would also be a good idea to post when your audience is online. Since we noted that the engagement of the first few hours matters when determining the visibility of your post, you need to post your content when they are most likely to get the highest engagement. You can pay attention to the Instagram Insights to determine the time when your audience is most active and ensure that you are posting during that window.

Instagram Reels Algorithm

The Reel is arguably one of the most important sections to master, as it is what will fuel your account discovery. This is because this section is predominantly shown to users who don't follow your account, and therefore, they help your account get discovered and grow.

The ranking signals for the reel are:

  • Watch time. This is the most essential ranking signal. Instagram will track the total number of hours watched, the video completion rate, and whether people are re-watching your video. If most of your viewers watch for more than three seconds, Instagram interprets that as a sign that you used a great hook, causing the reel to be pushed to a larger audience.
  • Completion rate/rewatch. When viewers watch to the end or rewatch the reel, this is interpreted as a sign of high-quality content. If they reply immediately, this is weighted more.
  • Saves. If users are saving your reels, Instagram interprets that as a sign that it is a high-quality reel.
  • Sends per reach. If your reel is shared in the DM, this is seen as a strong endorsement of a high-quality reel, thereby impacting the reel distribution. Sends have a weight that's five times more than likes, making the reach higher.
  • Likes per reach. This refers to the number of likes your Reel gets in comparison to the impressions. For instance, if your reel is seen by 500 people and gets 25 likes, it will outperform another one seen by 5000 people and gets 50 likes.

Some of the important thresholds to consider are:

  • The first 3 seconds. If over 60% of your viewers are watching for more than 3 seconds, your reel will be pushed to a bigger audience.
  • First 30 to 60 minutes. The engagement rate during this window will determine if your reel will be pushed to people who don't follow you.
  • A completion rate of over 50%. This is a strong signal that will determine if your Reel or other content will be recommended on the Explore page.

So, if you want to grow your Instagram account, you will need to start with a hook, as the first one to three seconds will determine if the Reel will be distributed or if its reach will be killed.   You can use a pattern interrupt, visual hooks, or text overlay to make people stop scrolling.

If you want people to share your reels through DM, you need to focus on increasing the completion rate, as this will make the algorithm recommend your reels. When creating your content, ask yourself if people would be willing to send the reel to a friend. If your answer is yes, you can be assured it will be rewarded by the algorithm.

Again, ensure that your Reel remains short. Even though Instagram now allows reels that are up to three minutes long, studies indicate that reels that are between 15 and 30 seconds have the highest completion rate.

The Introduction of Longer Reels

There was a time when Instagram would penalize reels that were longer than 60 seconds. However, this has changed in 2026, and the platform now recommends reels that are over three minutes to non-followers in the Reels Feed or Explore page. The impact of this is that:

  • Creators can now create product tutorials to reach new audiences.
  • Longer behind-the-scenes vlogs are now fine.
  • Creators can add educational content without impacting distribution.

However, before you start creating longer reels, you should remember that in this content format, the completion rate will decrease. For instance, if you create a 3-minute reel whose completion rate is 30%, it will perform poorly compared to a 30-second reel with a completion rate of 80%. Therefore, for the best results, you need to ensure that you combine length and retention.

The type of content you want to create will determine the length of your Instagram reel. For instance:

  • If you want to offer quick tips, entertaining content, or trending content, consider Shorter reels that are 5 to 30 seconds.
  • For storytelling, tutorials, and production demos, consider medium reels that are 30 to 90 seconds.
  • Long reels that are one to three minutes long are suitable for in-depth educational content, behind-the-scenes video, or multiple-step tutorials.

Using a Trial Reel to Test Your Reel

Another key feature that was added to Instagram is the trial reel, which allows users to publish a reel that is only shown to non-followers. This also means your current followers don't see the posts unless you share them with them.

To start using this feature, you should:

  • Create a reel in the same way you do before, toggling “Trial” prior to publication.
  • The Reel will be shown to a small group of non-followers.
  • Instagram will show you how it performs in terms of views, completion rate, likes, comments, and shares.
  • If you feel that the Reel has performed well, you can then share it with your followers.
  • If it performs poorly, you can avoid sharing it so that your followers will not get to see it.

This feature can, therefore, be a good way of testing topics, formats, or hooks without impacting your account’s engagement rate. Otherwise, if you create a reel that performs poorly, it will reduce your average engagement, which can impact your reels' distribution in the future. But with a trial reel, that risk is eradicated.

Some of the areas to use the trial reels are:

  • Testing new reel topics and formats.
  • Experimenting with the performance of longer reels.
  • Testing polarizing or controversial topics.

The Explore Algorithm

The Explore Page is another growth engine because it ensures your content is shown to people who don't follow your account based on user behavior. It plays an important role in the discovery of your content by a new audience. There are several ranking factors that determine if your content appears on the Explore page, such as:

  • Post-popularity. This refers to the speed at which a post becomes popular after its publication. If a post receives a higher engagement signal in the first one to two hours, it will be pushed more on the Explore page.
  • Engagement types. The Explore algorithm considers likes, shares, and saves on the Explore page. However, if your post is shared more by people who don't follow your account, this will have more weight.
  • Content format. Instagram prioritizes Reels and carousels when recommending content on the Explore page compared to static images.
  • Matching user interest. The algorithm considers the kind of posts a user has been interacting with more through likes, comments, shares, and saves on the Explore page before recommending more of such content. Your content will be shown to users with a matching profile.
  • Account history. Instagram considers your pattern of engagement. If your account gets high engagement on its recent posts, they are more likely to be shown on the Explore page.

Tips for Appearing on the Explore Page

If you want to appear on the Instagram Explore page, you must first please your current audience. If they engage heavily with your content in the first hour, your content will be shown to a small demographic on the Explore page. If the audience also likes to comment, share, and save your post, the distribution of the content will increase.

While there is no magic bullet for appearing on the Explore page, your focus should first be on getting strong engagement from your current following. If they do, chances are the small demographic that sees the reel will also like it. However, it's also important to be aware of the kinds of posts that will be excluded from appearing on the Instagram Explore page. These are:

  •  Accounts that have more than 10 reposts in 30 days.
  •  Content that is seen as possibility-sensitive.
  •  Accounts that violate the community guidelines.

Understanding the Stories Algorithm

Stories can be seen at the top of Instagram, in the form of a horizontal tray, but in no random order. The order in which stories appear first or even last is also determined by the Instagram algorithm. When doing that, the algorithm considers various signals, such as:

  • Engagement frequency. Stories that receive a lot of reactions, replies, DM replies, and sticker interactions, such as quizzes, questions, and polls, get shown more.  Each of these interactions indicates a stronger relationship.
  • Closeness. The algorithm will check the engagement patterns to determine your close friends depending on the patterns of interactions, such as mutual comments, DMs, time spent on a profile, and tagged posts.
  • Viewing history. If someone regularly watches your stories, the Instagram algorithm is likely to put your story at the top.
  • Recency. The stories that are most recent appear first, unlike in the Feed. Therefore, if you want your Instagram account to remain visible, you should post regularly.

How to Leverage Instagram Stories for Growth

Stories are usually shown to people who already follow you and, therefore, may not add much value when it comes to growing your reach. However, they can still be a great tool for improving your relationship with your current followers. This is because the Instagram algorithm rewards accounts that regularly create engaging stories.

There are several tips for using stories to grow your Instagram account:

  • Use interactive stickers. Polls, question boxes, and quizzes can help you increase engagement. Every interaction will direct the algorithm to add the stories to the user’s tray.
  • Be consistent in posting stories. When creating feed posts or reels, posting 3 to 5 times per week may work well. On the other hand, stories can perform better when you post daily for 3 to 7 frames a day.
  • Use a DM response. When your follower responds to your story, you can reply to them in the DM. Such a conversation in the DM can improve your relationship signals on the feed and story placement. You can use our Instagram DM marketing strategy to ensure better results.

The Impact of an Instagram Shadowban

While Instagram has denied that it shadowbans content, it agrees that certain content formats experienced reduced distribution because they violated the community guidelines. Some of the factors that can limit the recommendation of your content include:

  • Using flagged or banned hashtags.
  • Violating the Instagram community guidelines, no matter how minor the violation may be.
  • Spammy behaviors such as mass following or spamming comments.
  • Accessing Instagram using an unofficial API.
  • Posting content that has been flagged by the automated Instagram review system.

To determine if your account has been shadowbanned, click on your account settings, followed by Account status. You will see if any of your content is flagged or if your account is limited in the recommendation settings. If you realize that you are shadowbanned, there are several steps you can take to recover, such as:

  • Avoid the behavior that may have caused the shadowbanning. If you were using some banned hashtags, stop using them. The same applies to third-party bots.
  • Wait for 7 to 14 days. Usually, the limitation lasts for 7 to 14 days before it is lifted. Therefore, you can wait for those days.
  • Make sure you are posting high-quality and original content.
  • Engage authentically.
  • Only use Instagram's official APIs and tools. If you are using an unofficial tool, it can scrape or use the private APIs, resulting in account restrictions.

In Conclusion

The Instagram algorithm is constantly shifting, and what worked a few years ago doesn't work today. Therefore, you need to understand the major changes that have happened in 2026 so that you can align your content and Instagram growth strategy with these shifts. Doing so will help take your account to the next level.
