As the largest social media platform with over 2 billion users, Facebook is the biggest social media platform. The platform uses different factors to rank content in the Facebook algorithm. These include:

  • Timing. Facebook prioritizes posting time when determining the content to show users on their feed.
  • Engagement levels. If a post receives a high level of engagement, such as likes and comments, Facebook will interpret this as a sign of quality content and rank it higher.
  • Demographics. Facebook also considers factors such as user language, location, and gender when determining a user's preferred content.
  • Preferred content. The Facebook algorithms also prioritize the content a user is likely to engage with. If users engage more with video content, they will be shown more videos.
  • Relevance. The algorithm will look at posts with similar hashtags or keywords to determine shared interests.
  • Connections on Facebook. The Facebook algorithm is more likely to show people the content from the accounts they follow.

By combining the above signal, the Facebook algorithm can give the post a relevancy score, which shows whether a user might interact with it more.

Twitter Algorithm

The Twitter algorithm uses AI to show users the kind of content they are likely to interact with depending on their preferences, interests, and previous interactions. With over 500 million tweets daily, the Twitter algorithm looks into different factors to determine the most relevant time for posting on your timeline. Some of the factors that the Twitter algorithm considers when ranking content include:

  • Profile reputation score. If your profile actively engages with other similar profiles, it gains higher visibility. It determines a profile's credibility based on its past activities, followers, and device usage.

Instagram Algorithm

Instagram has five sections, each with its algorithm: Feed, Explore, Stories, Reels, and Section. Here is how the Instagram algorithm works:

Instagram Feed

The Instagram feed consists of a mix of the content from the account you follow and similar profiles. Some of the factors that the platform uses to show content on its feed include:

  • Recency. When determining which posts to show users, Instagram will look at when the post was done and prioritize the most recent posts.
  • Accounts followed. Instagram will show posts from the accounts you follow organically on your feed.
  • User activity. When curating content for you, the IG algorithm will also consider your activity, such as the posts you shared, saved, or liked.
  • Type of content. The algorithm will show you more photos if you regularly interact with photos. The same applies to videos and carousels.
  • Interaction history. If you interact more with an account's posts, they are more likely to appear on your timeline.

Instagram Reels

Instagram reels work the same way as Explore, aiming to help users explore content from accounts they don't follow. Instagram considers several factors when determining the reels to show to users, such as:

  • User activity. If you recently liked, saved, shared, or commented on a particular reel, IG will show you more of them.
  • Accounts you interacted with. If you recently interacted with a reel from an account you don't follow, you will be shown more reels from the account and other similar ones.
  • Relevance. Instagram will also consider the relevance of the content by examining factors such as comments, likes, and saves.
  • Account information. An account's popularity, such as engagement and follower count, will also determine the content recommendations.

Instagram Stories

With Instagram stories, you can post videos and photos that disappear in 24 hours. This section has almost the same ranking factors as the IG feed. It considers factors such as:

  • User viewing history. When users frequently view an account's stories, they will be shown more of the same.
  • Closeness. The Instagram algorithm also considers how you relate to the story's creator, such as shared location, DM interactions, and mutual allows.

Instagram Explore Page

The Explore page aims to help users discover new posts without the need to search for the posts. That means it's usually made up of posts from the accounts you don't follow even though Instagram thinks you might enjoy them. It considers various factors such as:

  • Past interaction of the user. How a user previously engaged with a post.
  • Explore activity. How has the user previously interacted with the Explore page? What posts did they like?
  • Popularity of posts. It considers the number of comments, shares, saves, likes, and influencer visibility.
  • Account interaction frequency. How often has the user previously interacted with the account in the recent past?

YouTube Algorithm

Some of the factors that YouTube considers when ranking videos on its platforms include:

  • Performance of the video. The YouTube algorithm measures the performance of YouTube videos in terms of likes, shares, and comments.
  • Click-through rate. The YouTube algorithm considers how easy it is for the user to interact with the recommended video.
  • Search history. YouTube will consider the keywords viewers searched for and where they did that several times.
  • Retention and watch time. If a video has a longer watch, this is an indication of its quality and ability to retain viewers.
  • Recency. YouTube will often promote newer videos to the channel subscribers.
  • Watch history and action. How long viewers watch a video and how they interact with it by liking and commenting on it will also affect the YouTube video recommendation.
  • Location and demographic. When a viewer uploads a video in a particular location, it is often pushed to the local view before being promoted to the broader audience.

TikTok Algorithm

The TikTok algorithm works in a way that it curates the content appearing on the For You Feed depending on different signals such as:

  • User interaction. It considers the comments, views, likes, and shares. It also considers the “Suggested for You” or the Accounts you follow.
  • Location. The algorithm will recommend the most popular and recent content in your location.
  • Video detail. TikTok will also look at the video captions, quality, hashtags, and details when recommending content.
  • Account and device setting. The algorithm will consider various factors such as the device type, country, and language.
  • Watch time. Your TikTok feed will also consider the number of completed videos and replays.

Creating a Content Strategy to Meet The Needs of The Algorithm

It is clear that if you want to increase the visibility of your content, you need to create content that meets the needs of the algorithms. Here are several tips for creating content that will rank highly on social media:

One way of doing that is by asking questions that your audience resonates with. For example, you can ask them about their review on a trending topic. However, when creating questions for your target audience, you must do it right. Avoid offensive and controversial questions that can cause negative discussions.

Tag Other Accounts

Tagging other accounts is a simple but effective way to drive your posts' engagement. This method works by boosting collaboration efforts and increasing visibility and brand exposure. For instance, when you tag someone on your pictures on Instagram, it will appear in their Photos of You section, making it visible to their followers. However, you must ensure the respective accounts receive the tagged photos well. Therefore, start by building a good relationship with the account and also ensure that the theme of the post you are tagging is relevant to them.

Choose the Best Posting Time

We noted that platforms like Twitter and Instagram consider recency when recommending content to users. That also means you need to post when your audience is online, as this will ensure maximum interaction and visibility. However, it's also important to note that the best posting time will depend on different factors, such as your audience, platform, and posting time.

Use Keywords and Hashtags

The use of the right hashtags and keywords will determine the visibility of your content. However, you need to use three to five keywords to avoid interrupting the visibility of the content. Avoid the big hashtags as they may be saturated. Instead, use the focused ones. For instance, instead of using #shoes as your hashtag, you can opt for a hashtag like #orthopedicrunningshoes. Since the latter will have fewer posts, the competition is less likely to be stiff than the former. You can use the autocomplete function to find hashtags. You also need to have a good TikTok hashtag strategy for niche markets.

Have a Consistent Posting Schedule

Consistency in social media posting will help increase the visibility of your posts, as social media growth strategies require consistency. Since platforms such as Twitter and Instagram prioritize the recency of a post, posting regularly will increase its visibility. Therefore, ensure you understand the best time to post according to the Instagram algorithm.

However, do not post for its own sake. You want to ensure you post relevant content your followers will find interesting. You can also use a social media calendar to schedule posts and stay organized.

Leverage Video Content

Video content often has a higher engagement rate than texts and images. This can be attributed to the fact that it is usually easy to understand videos and it adds a personal touch to the message. However, be creative when creating video content. Some of the popular types of videos you can create include:

  • Behind-the-scene photos of your products.
  • How-to videos.
  • Unboxing videos.
